Is your network marketing business an incubator or a launching pad?
Years ago when cassette tapes were hot technology, I was listening to a training by Art Jonak and Big Al Tom Schreiter, and I remember them saying, “Don’t worry if someone is sleeping in your business. One day
they will wake up, and when they do, you want them to wake up in your organization!”
So much of network marketing efforts are geared to move fast, get it today. There seem to be 2 camps: “love ‘em and nurture” or “leave ‘em, just go get more”. I absolutely agree with moving quickly and getting into action. However, I have learned that I can never “motivate” someone into moving quickly. They must motivate themselves. I have learned that my organization is both an incubator and a launching pad.
Some people on your team are sleeping. They are moving slowly, getting the lay of the land so to speak. For some it’s just their personality style. Others have not woken up to the entrepreneurial spirit inside
of them. A few are listening to old scripting inside their heads about money, poverty, greed, or perceived incompetence. Those in your incubator need your encouragement, a positive team culture, and your respect for what they do contribute to your dream. Either way you have precious little control over their behavior. They don’t need your cattle prod. They will not understand why they need a “vision statement” or a “why”. They don’t have one yet. Moving out of their comfort zone is a herculean task for them.
Doers come in and immediately contact everyone they know. Sponsoring is effortless for them. They intuitively prospect everyone, and get a positive response from many. When they get a negative response, they ignore it. They have good resilience. Their personal vision is strong. Their entrepreneurial spirit is running at 110%. They don’t need pep talks, they give them! For these distributors, your business is a launching pad for their dreams.
Your business will have both-sleepers and doers. The game is to learn how to identify the sleeper (who may talk big, show up at meetings) from the doer. The danger is to over focus on the sleeper, to keep trying to
incentivize their actions. This is a risk for those of you who are nurturers and consensus builders at heart. It’s also a trap that can keep you in management mode instead of prospecting mode. Don’t ignore nor put down their efforts no matter how slow they are going. Encourage the sleeper, spend your personal time with the doer.
Keep balance in your organization. Provide the support, training, and challenge the doer needs and thrives on. Keep the energy up. Maintain high standards of performance and excellence. Keep the door open for the sleeper. One day some of your sleepers will wake up and become doers.
Let me know- what are you doing to create a balanced organization? How do you meet the business needs
of achievers without bulldozing the slower moving members of your team?
